How and Where to Store Cleaning Products

Most workplaces will have a janitorial or cleaning closet where they can store products. But did you know that it’s not just where you store your products, but how that can pose a real health and safety risk to your facility? From storing flammable products next to non-flammable products, to keeping chemicals in a warm closet, there are several things to consider about the how’s and why’s to cleaning product storage.If your stomach is sinking and this feels all too familiar to your facility, don’t panic! There are some simple steps you can take to ensure that your storage space is as safe as it possibly can be. We’ve compiled a list of do’s and don’ts so you can quickly identify how best to organize your storage space:Do have your own janitorial cupboard at work, if you don’t already. This not only means that all cleaning products are kept in one place and employees don’t have to go hunting for disinfectant spray, but it will go a long way to keeping your facility safer by keeping chemicals apart from common areas, such as the kitchen.Do separate solid and liquid products, flammable and non-flammable products, and acids and alkalis., such as spray cleaners, bleach, detergent, and cleaners with abrasive compounds.Do consider using green supplies as these are generally safer to use (and to store). Most products green cleaners aren’t corrosive, and will lend better air quality to your storage space.Do use step stools if you keep your cleaning products out of reach as this will allow your products to be easily reached and prevent falls.Do use health and safety signs where necessary.Do store brushes, brooms and mop heads upright, and make sure they are drained of excess water in a well-ventilated area. Not only will this prevent drips from forming on the floor, but it will ensure that your tools last longer.Do prevent spillage. Some chemicals are never supposed to be mixed (such as bleach and ammonia) so you should take care that these sorts of chemicals are stored in such a way that they won’t spill and potentially combine.Don’t store products in places that are too hot or too cold. When it comes to maintaining the quality of your cleaning supplies, room temperature definitely comes into play. Make sure your storage unit isn’t overly warm or cool.Don’t keep or clean old sponges – just throw them out!
